#THCtestimony: Jay Kelley gives the scoop on being a Residential Counselor

I'm Jay. It's easy to remember and hard to forget. I'm often called Ray many times by the kids and my co-workers, but due to my ability to light up a room I'm okay with that (sometimes!). According to Becky, I'm sassy and I embrace it to the fullest! I’ve been working at THC for three full years.

I have always felt like Trent Hill Center chose me as a result of me cheering one of my students at their 5th grade graduation (that’s a story for another time).I'm so forever grateful that it did. I've been able to love, help, inspire, encourage, and motivate many kiddos by just simply being myself.

Some of the things I've learned are: you gotta just LET IT GO! Every day is a new day, and a new beginning. Everything isn't an attack towards you. Our job as Residential Counselors is to make sure the kiddos know that they MATTER, what they do MATTERS, what they say MATTERS, and they are worthy of it ALL!

I believe there is truth in the mantra: life is a journey, and not a destination, there are no mistakes, just chances we take.

What you should know about the Trent Hill Center is: EVERYTHING we do starts from the HEART! Check out our logo. We love what we do, we love each other, and we love the kiddos. We are a family. Some of the kids that come into our care have experienced a lot and most of them have never had a person that actually loves them, and we are experts in that department.

If there was one thing I would want our residents to walk away from us it is this: “Be yourself, everyone else will just have to adjust!”
